Biography

stefan_seaStefan Sonvilla-Weiss, Ph.D., is an international media scholar, designer, and professor from Austria.

He was a media design professor and dean from 2014 to 2021 at the University of Art and Design Linz, Austria. From 2003-2014, he worked first as a visiting professor at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and from 2006 on as a full professor and head of an international MA program at Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture Helsinki.

His international activities as a researcher, artist, and speaker brought him to many institutions around the world, for example, Oxford University–Internet Institute, Seoul National University–Design Talks, National Institute of Multimedia Education Tokyo, University of the Arts London, Zurich University of the Arts, ZKM Karlsruhe, Tongji University, Shanghai.

He published the monographs Spaces of Commemoration and Communication (transcript/Columbia University Press, 2023) Synthesis & Nullification. Works 1991 – 2011 (Springer Wien/New York, 2012), (In)visible. Learning to Act in the Metaverse (Springer Wien/New York, 2008), Virtual School – kunstnetzwerk.at (Peter Lang, 2003), and he has edited VIS-A-VIS Medien.Kunst.Bildung (DeGruyter, 2017), Future Learning Spaces (Aalto University Press, 2012), Mashup Cultures (Springer, 2010), and (e)Pedagogy Design – Visual Knowledge Building (Peter Lang, 2005).
