BIOGRAPHY

stefan_sonvilla-weiss_smallStefan Sonvilla-Weiss is professor and head of the international Master of Arts program ePedagogy Design – Visual Knowledge Building at Aalto University / School of Art and Design Helsinki.

I studied philosophy, graphics, art and design education and communication theory in Salzburg and Vienna and I earned a Master of Arts degree in 1986 and a PhD degree in visual arts education and communication theory in 2001, both conferred by the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

The last 20 years I worked as art and design teacher, media artist, graphic designer, author, multimedia-developer and university teacher.

During the 1990′s, I initiated several art and design related e-learning initiatives, managing the design, content creation and media-didactical concepts.

My research interests are in the visual knowledge building in collaborative learning processes, and the media-didactical implications how technology, pedagogy and organizational structure influence and constrain each other in the process of educational change. I have served as external assessor and reviewer for a number of scientific and research bodies, including the European Commission in the Programmes IST, eLearning, Media, Erasmus, etc. and I have received several honours and scholarships.

I am married to Barbara Sonvilla and we have a daughter, Felicitas (*1988), and a son, Silvius (*1994).
